What is Giggles Children’s Theater?
Giggles Children’s Theater is a 70 seat performance venue located at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Paterson, NJ. The Theater has been a haven of the healing arts for disadvantaged, sick and injured children since opening in 2005. Our primary mission is to help improve the quality of children’s lives as they meet the challenges of illness and treatment. When a child is hospitalized they are both scared and bored at the same time. It doesn’t take long before cabin fever takes hold and compounds the problem. Giggles Children’s Theater alleviates this problem with two to three live shows weekly that allow a the patient to leave their room and go to the theater where they can forget their troubles and enjoy the show.
For the children who are too sick to come to the theater itself, live shows are broadcast into their rooms allowing the child to interact with the performers by calling into the theater. On days when a live show is not scheduled, pre-recorded shows are broadcast into the child’s room and other Children’s Hospitals around the country each day.
Our secondary mission is to bring free, live, cultural and artistic programs to the community of Paterson. Arts programs, such as Giggles, help to improve the resident’s quality of life. According to Arts Watch, “University of Pennsylvania researchers have demonstrated that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement, more social cohesion, higher children welfare and lower poverty rates”. Giggles aspires to be part of the solution to revitalize our community by offering access to free live theater.
